Two people drowned and one teenager remains missing following separate incidents along Sri Lanka’s western coastline in November, police said.

On 16 November, a 17-year-old boy from Katukurunda, Moratuwa, went missing while bathing with two friends at the Egoda Uyana beach. All three were dragged out by strong waves, but residents managed to rescue two of them. Egoda Uyana Police said search operations are continuing to locate the missing teenager.

At Galle Face in Colombo, two youths were rescued on the same evening after being swept away by waves. One of them, a 19-year-old from Agarapatana, died after being admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo. The other remains under treatment. Colombo Fort Police are conducting further inquiries.

In a separate incident at the Chilaw beach on 16 November, a 61-year-old woman from Dankotuwa died after she and her eight-year-old grandchild were pulled into the water by a strong wave. Residents rescued the pair and admitted them to the Chilaw Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead.

Police in Egoda Uyana, Colombo Fort, and Halawatha have launched investigations into the two drowning deaths and the ongoing search for the missing teenager. (Newswire)
