Sri Lanka welcomes two millionth tourist for 2025, signalling strong rebound in arrivals.
Sri Lanka on Monday marked a major milestone in its post-crisis tourism recovery, welcoming its two millionth visitor for 2025 — a French couple who arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport on 17 November.
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) said the country is now on track to reach at least 2.3 million tourist arrivals this year, moving closer to its annual target of 2.5 million. The achievement reflects strong global interest in Sri Lanka, supported by intensified promotional campaigns and participation in major travel fairs such as WTM, ATB, and IFTM Paris.
The two millionth visitors, Mr. Rafael and Ms. Clair from France, received a special cultural welcome featuring traditional dancers and a ceremony at the Silk Route lounge. The couple also cut a celebratory cake to mark the occasion, describing the experience as a memorable surprise.
Tourism officials say the milestone highlights the sector’s steady revival following years of setbacks, including the Easter Sunday attacks, the pandemic, and the economic crisis. Sri Lanka last crossed the two-million mark in 2018.
Authorities note that 2025 has been one of the strongest years for the industry in recent times, with steady growth in arrivals and multiple international accolades. Sri Lanka Tourism is also preparing to launch new promotional initiatives, including an expanded PR and digital campaign and a free-visa programme aimed at attracting more travellers.
With the momentum gained this year, the tourism sector expects further growth in 2026, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s position as a leading destination known for its beaches, wildlife, culture, and hill-country landscapes. (Newswire)
