Sri Lanka has been named among the 50 Best Places to Travel in 2026 by the internationally recognised travel publication Travel + Leisure, which describes the island as a “stand-alone destination” for culture, adventure, and natural beauty.

The feature highlights Sri Lanka’s diverse appeal across the country, noting that adventurous travellers are increasingly exploring the northern region, particularly Jaffna, as well as the central highlands, where hiking routes through Horton Plains and the surrounding tea estates continue to draw global interest.

The southern coastline is also singled out for its beaches, marine life, and outdoor activities, with the magazine noting that coastal journeys, cycling routes, and walking trails have become key attractions for visitors seeking more immersive experiences.

The publication reports that international travel interest in Sri Lanka is rising steadily, with expanded itineraries and new routes expected to bring more visitors to major cultural sites, scenic landscapes, and national parks in the year ahead. Safari experiences, rail travel through the hill country, and cultural tours of major cities remain among the country’s most sought-after offerings.

Sri Lanka’s eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, combined with its layered heritage shaped by Portuguese, Dutch, and Burgher influences, continue to position the island as a destination with significant cultural depth. Travel + Leisure also notes that the country’s post-war recovery and renewed focus on tourism have strengthened its appeal as a major global destination going into 2026. (Newswire)
