Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa says the party has initiated action against a local council candidate who was arrested in connection with the large haul of narcotics that was found on a fishing vessel intercepted in the Southern seas.
Taking to ‘X’, MP Premadasa said the SJB membership of the person accused of narcotics-related arrest yesterday has been suspended with immediate effect.
He further said that a separate inquiry will be initiated to take further relevant action in this regard.
“The SJB as a party is vehemently opposed to the narco trade, which is a cancer to our society. We firmly believe in reformulating our laws in order to institute the highest punishment on those who engage in this illegal, reprehensible activity,” he added.
His comments come after the Police Narcotics Bureau officials confirmed that a Samagi Jana Balawegaya local government candidate from Pannala was taken into custody in connection with the drug operation.
The Sri Lanka Navy had seized over 376 kilos of narcotics, consisting of heroin and ‘ICE’, valued at an estimated Rs. 4 billion, from the vessel. (Newswire)
