The Central Cultural Fund says the opening of the lighting project at the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge, a major attraction for local and foreign tourists, has been postponed indefinitely.
Director General Dr. Nilan Cooray said the delay stems from a dispute over obtaining an electricity line through a private property. The landowner has objected to allowing the power cables needed to supply electricity to the transformer installed for lighting the bridge and surrounding area.
Dr. Cooray noted that alternative methods to secure the electricity line have been planned, but the process is technically complex. The project, which was expected to be completed this month, has therefore been delayed without a new date.
The initiative aims to develop the Nine Arch Bridge and its surroundings into a tourist zone, and is being carried out as a joint venture between the Central Cultural Fund and the Railway Department.
