The death toll from the rockslide that struck Pahala Kadugannawa on the Colombo–Kandy main road has risen to six, as authorities continue restoration and safety operations in the disaster-hit area, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) said.
While search and rescue operations have now been completed, the NBRO said efforts to stabilise the slope and return the affected zone to normalcy are still underway with the assistance of Sri Lanka Army personnel from Beragala.
As a precautionary measure, the Colombo–Kandy main road will remain closed through Pahala Kadugannawa for the next 24 hours. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes, including Colombo–Kurunegala–Kandy, Colombo via Karandupana to Kandy, and routes passing through Mawanella, Hemmathagama and Rampale. Additional access is also available via Mawanella and Ganewatta junction through Kovil Kanda towards Pilimathalawa and Kandy.
Authorities have urged the public to strictly follow road diversion notices and remain vigilant, warning that further soil movement cannot be ruled out due to unstable ground conditions.
Further updates will be issued as monitoring and restoration work continues. (Newswire)
