Political interference in judicial matters: Opposition seeks urgent parliamentary inquiry

Opposition MP Dilith Jayaweera warned that Sri Lanka’s judicial independence is under threat, alleging increased political interference in the removal, transfer and promotion of judges following the current government’s assumption of power.

In a statement, Jayaweera said a strong and independent judiciary is a vital pillar of democracy, but claimed recent actions indicate attempts to weaken that independence. He alleged that political influence has affected decisions within the judicial service and cited reports of judges being removed at the request of the Inspector General of Police, calling it an unprecedented development.

“The judiciary is not a rubber stamp of the police. It is one of the three pillars that safeguards the sovereignty of the people,” he said.

Jayaweera said such developments pose a serious challenge to the autonomy of the superior courts and undermine public trust in the justice system.

In response, he said he has submitted a proposal to the Speaker seeking the establishment of a special parliamentary committee to review appointments, removals, transfers and promotions of judicial officers carried out by the Judicial Service Commission.

He said several opposition lawmakers, including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, have endorsed the proposal.

Jayaweera said the legislature has a constitutional duty to defend the independence of the judiciary and ensure that it remains free from external influence. (Newswire)
