The arrival of India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, in Colombo for the International Fleet Review 2025 reflects both strategic intent and symbolic importance, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health and Mass Media Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Speaking at a reception onboard the vessel, where he attended as Chief Guest, Jayatissa said the visit demonstrates India’s growing technological capabilities and its commitment to regional maritime security. He noted that the participation of INS Vikrant in the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Sri Lanka Navy added further significance to the occasion.

The Minister said the presence of the carrier served as a clear signal of the importance both nations place on strengthening defence cooperation and maintaining security in the Indian Ocean region. He highlighted the long-standing maritime partnership between Sri Lanka and India, including joint exercises, coordinated patrols, disaster response operations, hydrographic surveys and training initiatives.

Jayatissa also referenced India’s MAHASAGAR maritime vision, which he said aligns with Sri Lanka’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and stable Indian Ocean open to mutually beneficial cooperation.

INS Vikrant is participating in the International Fleet Review as part of its regional deployment. The minister expressed confidence that the visit would further deepen ties between the two navies and contribute to expanding defence and maritime cooperation in the years ahead. (Newswire)
