Earthquake recorded in Indian Ocean; Sri Lankan coastal residents advised to stay alert

The National Tsunami Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology announced that an earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale occurred in the Indian Ocean off Northern Sumatra, Indonesia, at 10:26 am today (27).

According to the Earthquake Information Bulletin, the tremor was recorded at a depth of 25 km, with preliminary coordinates at latitude 2.68°N and longitude 96.07°E.

While people living near and along the coastal areas around Sri Lanka have been advised to remain attentive to future announcements in this regard, the National Tsunami Early Warning Centre said there is no Tsunami threat for Sri Lanka. (Newswire)
