The Department of Irrigation reports that the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 08.30 am today has been reported in the Weraganthota area, recording 279.6 mm of rainfall.

The Department has issued a flood warning to the area due to a rise in the water level of the Mahaweli River.

Over 200 mm of rain has also been recorded in the Manampitiya, Thaldena, Yaka Wewa, and Thanthrimale areas during this period.

Over 100 mm of rainfall has been reported in the Holombuwa, Deraniyagala, Thanamalwila, Wellawaya, Nakkala, Siyambalanduwa, Padiyathalawa, Peradeniya, Nawalapitiya, Horowpathana, Galgamuwa, and Giriulla areas.

Minor and major flood warnings have been issued to several areas due to a rise in the water levels of several rivers in Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Athula Karunanayake, says this may be the highest rainfall recorded in Sri Lanka in recent history. (Newswire)
