Opposition MP Shanakiyan Rasamanikkam has called on President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to issue an immediate official circular or gazette granting clear authority to government officials to act during the ongoing disaster situation, warning that delays are worsening the suffering of affected communities.
Speaking after a special meeting chaired by the President with the participation of opposition party leaders, Rasamanikkam said discussions focused on urgent measures needed to address the severe and unpredictable weather conditions affecting the country.
He stressed that without a formal written directive, district and divisional officials hesitate to take action due to fears of administrative or legal consequences, which in turn slows down relief delivery to victims. He urged the President to empower District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries to immediately purchase essential emergency items for affected families.
The MP noted that three types of relief programmes were discussed at the meeting: cooked meals prepared by the military for those in relief camps, dry rations for families staying with relatives, and cooked meals for those remaining in their own homes. However, he pointed out that practical implementation of this plan would be impossible without clear written instructions from the central government.
Rasamanikkam also raised concerns over the lack of disaster response experience among some current NPP parliamentarians, stating that relief efforts should be handled with the support of experienced individuals and without government–opposition divisions, as lives are at stake
He further highlighted that several areas have been without electricity for nearly two days, leaving communities disconnected from vital communication channels, and urged authorities to restore power immediately to ensure effective coordination and public safety. (Newswire)
