Kelani River level at Nagalagam Street begins to fall after reaching peak

December 1, 2025 at 9:38 PM

The water level of the Kelani River at Nagalagam Street, which remained above 8 ft throughout the evening and triggered a Major Flood warning, has now begun to show a slight drop.

According to real-time hydrological data, the level, which fluctuated between 8.20 ft and 8.30 ft earlier today, has now reduced to around 8.10 ft. This is the first noticeable decline since the river reached its peak following days of heavy rainfall linked to Cyclone Ditwah.

Authorities caution, however, that despite the reduction, the river still remains well above the 7 ft major flood threshold, and flood conditions in Colombo and surrounding low-lying areas will continue.

Experts say that even with a downward trend, water is expected to remain at elevated levels for several hours, and residents in at-risk zones should continue to follow the instructions of emergency services. (Newswire)
