The Government of China has extended humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, providing over USD 1 million in financial and material support.

On Dec. 2, Sri Lanka received USD 1 million in financial aid and RMB 10 million (approx. USD 1.4 million) worth of emergency relief supplies from China.

Additionally, USD 100,000 was donated through the Red Cross Society of China to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, while Chinese businesses and citizens in Sri Lanka contributed LKR 10 million toward relief efforts.

The aid package was formally handed over by Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Qi Zhenhong and accepted by Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath on behalf of the Sri Lankan government.

Minister Herath conveyed the government’s gratitude to China for its continued support, describing China as a longstanding and reliable partner in times of crisis.

The Chinese government expressed condolences to those affected and reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. It voiced confidence in Sri Lanka’s recovery under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and with the support of the international community.

Reiterating the sentiment, “A friend in need is a friend indeed,” China pledged continued support as Sri Lanka works to rebuild following the disaster. (Newswire)
