Minister of Power, Kumara Jayakody, has engaged in an inspection tour of the Rantabe-Mahiyanganaya 132kVA transmission system, which was severely damaged due to the massive disaster situation that occurred in Sri Lanka recently.

In a statement on social media, Minister Jayakody said the inspection tour was conducted with the aim of providing the necessary guidance and support for the restoration process, and to encourage the electricity workers who are dedicating themselves with great commitment and effort to this task.

He further said that because of the destruction caused to this transmission system, the electricity supply to the eastern areas of the country belonging to the Mahiyanganaya–Vavunativu grid substation, including Batticaloa, Ampara, and Kalmunai, was severely disrupted.

The Ceylon Electricity Board acted swiftly and temporarily provided a 33kV electricity supply, thereby restoring power to some extent, ensuring supply to essential places such as hospitals, and delivering electricity to the above areas at specific intervals within fixed timeframes, he said.

Minister Jayakody further said that, however, to fully restore the electricity supply, it will be necessary to construct two towers and carry out major repairs to the transmission line system.

“Everyone is working with great effort to complete this task within the next few days, and it is expected that the people in the above areas will understand the situation and act with cooperation and patience,” he added. (Newswire)
