The Department of Meteorology says rainfall may increase on December 9, 10, and 11 due to the Northeast Monsoon weather affecting Sri Lanka.

Addressing the media, the department’s Director General, Athula Karunanayake, stated that during this period, the wind speed will also increase.

He also said that thunder showers are fewer during the Northeast Monsoon, compared to the Inter‑Monsoon.

Because of the activation of the Northeast Monsoon, rainfall may increase after December 9 in the Northern, North Central, North Western, Eastern, and Uva Provinces, and at any time, rain or thunder showers may occur in those areas, Athula Karunanayake said.

He further said that the sky in these areas will be heavily clouded, and rainfall of about 75 or 100 mm may occur.

Although there may not be thunder showers during this period, rain may occur for the other provinces of the island, especially the Southwestern part, Athula Karunanayake said.

He went on to note that a disturbed condition of the atmosphere from the southeast direction towards Sri Lanka exists from October to December.

Athula Karunanayake said that the disturbance in the lower atmosphere around the island has also contributed to the activation of the Northeast Monsoon, and that this disturbance in the Bay of Bengal exists far southeast of the island near the Andaman Islands.

He said after December 9, the sea may become rough due to this reason,  requesting fishermen and sailors to pay close attention to future announcements. (Newswire)
