Sri Lanka Landslide and Flood Deaths Rise to 627 After New Recoveries

Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center says 627 people have died and 190 are missing after the floods and landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah. The latest report, issued at noon on December 7, shows more than 2.17 million people have been affected across 25 districts.

According to the DMC, a total of 611,530 families have been impacted. At least 4,517 houses have been fully destroyed, while 76,066 have suffered partial damage, placing the number of damaged homes at more than 80,500.

Kandy remains the worst-hit district, reporting 232 deaths and 81 missing persons. The district also recorded the highest property destruction, with 1,800 fully damaged houses and more than 13,000 partially damaged homes. Colombo, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Badulla and Nuwara Eliya also reported high casualty counts and extensive structural losses.

Officials say 956 safety centers have been established nationwide to shelter displaced families. As of Sunday afternoon, 27,663 families — a total of 89,857 people — were staying in temporary shelters. (Newswire)
