Sri Lanka cricketer Chamika Karunaratne was released Monday on 1 million rupees personal bail after a woman filed a complaint claiming he fathered her child and refused responsibility, court officials said.
The complaint was filed by Sewwandhi Senarathna, who identified herself as an airline pilot. She alleged she had a sexual relationship with Karunaratne, resulting in the birth of a child, and asked the court to order a DNA test to confirm paternity.
Karunaratne’s attorney, Asela Rekawa, opposed the request, saying his client rejects the allegation and claiming the complainant had been in a relationship with an Indian national during the same period. He submitted a photograph to court in support of that claim.
Rekawa told the magistrate that the court does not have the authority to order a DNA test and that the burden of proving the allegation lies with the complainant, not the accused.
The magistrate granted bail and scheduled the case to be heard again on Jan. 30, 2026. (Newswire)
