Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya visited the Peradeniya University recently devastated by flooding triggered by Cyclone Ditwah. She inquired into the wellbeing of faculty, staff and students and met with recovery workers to observe ongoing efforts toward restoration.
The visit came after the university suffered massive damage from floodwaters that surged onto the campus on the night of November 27, submerging several faculties.
At the time of the flooding a large number of students remained on campus; while the majority were safely evacuated.
During her visit the Prime Minister stressed government support for restoration and resettlement efforts. She also spoke with students and faculty members, assuring them that all affected members of the university community would receive the necessary aid.
As floodwaters recede and cleanup begins, the full extent of damage to infrastructure and academic facilities remains under assessment. (Newswire)
