The European Union has allocated up to 1.8 million euros (around LKR 640 million) to support relief efforts in Sri Lanka following the recent floods. This includes 500,000 euros channelled through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to provide urgent shelter, food and other essential assistance.
Alongside financial support, the EU is sending in-kind relief through its Civil Protection Mechanism. Germany has contributed 4,600 shelter items, while France is dispatching more than 3,400 emergency supplies. Italy is deploying a team of engineering experts to assist with recovery work and infrastructure safety.
The EU has also activated its Copernicus rapid mapping service to supply satellite maps that will help local authorities assess the scale of the disaster and coordinate relief operations. (Newswire)
