An individual who allegedly threw a bag of waste onto the Colombo–Katunayake Expressway has been arrested by the Seeduwa Police, the Expressway Police Division announced.

The incident occurred this evening (10 December) near the 19 km post of the expressway, when mobile patrol officers observed the driver of a passenger van travelling from Colombo toward Katunayake throwing a waste-filled bag onto the highway.

Following the observation, officers notified the Seeduwa sub-station, which subsequently arrested the suspect under the provisions of the Motor Traffic Act for littering the expressway. He was later produced before the Seeduwa Police Station.

Police said the suspect is a 35-year-old resident of Alvai, Jaffna, and is scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on 11 December.

Authorities stated that daily maintenance of the expressway is carried out by the Road Development Authority, and improper disposal of waste poses risks to both road cleanliness and the safety of motorists. Police further reiterated that enforcement operations will continue against drivers who engage in such violations, noting that littering on high-speed roads can endanger other vehicles and passengers.
