Mano questions relief for marginalized plantation communities

Opposition MP Mano Ganesan has questioned where the most marginalized plantation community fits into the relief matrix of the government.

In a post on ‘X’, MP Ganesan said that he acknowledges the relief allowances announced by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on 5 December on the final day of the Budget session.

“I chose not to join the opposition walkout, opting instead to hear the President out in good faith. But as the Tamil Progressive Alliance Leader, I still don’t see where the most marginalized plantation community fits into the relief matrix,” he said.

MP Ganesan pointed out that Sri Lanka’s international partners and development stakeholders, who consistently back the country, need to place the country’s most vulnerable populations at the top of the priority stack.

He made the comments following visits to the Kandy District, Alugolla Division, and Nawalapitiya, which were among the worst hit by landslides triggered by Cyclone Ditwah.

Following his visit, MP Mano Ganesan pointed out that the state’s operational footprint hasn’t reached these areas, and plantation-worker families remain literally buried under the landslide soil. (Newswire)
