Public Support Sought in ATM Card Fraud Investigation

December 11, 2025 at 1:50 AM

The Sri Lanka Police are seeking public assistance to apprehend a serial ATM card fraud suspect believed to be operating across various parts of the island. The appeal follows a recent incident reported at the Kalutara South Police Station where a man was defrauded of LKR 200,000.

The victim, a resident of Jayanthipura, Polonnaruwa, filed a complaint stating that on August 19, 2025, he approached an ATM in Kalutara city to withdraw cash. He accepted help from an unknown individual who was present at the ATM booth. During the exchange, the victim handed over his ATM card and PIN. The suspect, under the guise of assistance, allegedly swapped the original card with a different one before leaving the scene. The victim later discovered that his original card had been used to fraudulently withdraw LKR 200,000 from his account.

Further police investigations have revealed that the suspect is linked to at least four similar complaints previously filed at the Kalutara South and Wadduwa Police Stations. Authorities believe the individual is a sophisticated serial offender who travels throughout the country specifically to target unsuspecting victims using this method of ATM card swapping.
