Sri Lanka has approved the establishment of two 50-megawatt wind power stations in Mullikulam in the Mannar region, advancing the government’s long-term target of generating 70 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
The Cabinet of Ministers said approval was granted on February 10, 2025, to call for proposals from private-sector developers for the 100-megawatt Mullikulam Wind Power Project. The project will be implemented under a construction, ownership and operation model with a 20-year monitoring period.
Seven proposals were submitted under an international competitive bidding process. After evaluating the submissions, the Cabinet approved the Power Minister’s recommendation to award the contracts to a consortium comprising Vidullanka PLC, David Pieris Motor Company (Lanka) Limited and WindForce PLC.
The government said the project is part of its broader plan to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on fossil fuels in the coming decade. (Newswire)
