Police in Rambukkana have arrested a man in connection with the theft of cables from a local telephone transmission tower, seizing more than 13 kilograms of copper wire believed to be from the site.

The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old resident of the Rambukkana area, was taken into custody on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. The arrest followed an investigation into the theft at a tower located in the Talhenkanda area of Yatagama, within the Rambukkana Police Division.

The Rambukkana Police is conducting further investigations into the incident and the suspect.

Authorities have issued a warning to the public, noting that cable thefts are severely hindering efforts to restore vital communications services following the recent disaster situation. The thefts are reportedly occurring in difficult-to-access areas and locations where towers have been damaged or are undergoing reconstruction.

“Since such thefts of cables are a serious obstacle to the prompt restoration of telephone and internet connections, if you observe suspicious persons, immediately inform your nearest police,” a police statement advised the public. (Newswire)
