Sri Lanka’s railway network has partially resumed operations following the impact of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, with nearly 70 percent of passenger rail lines now back in service, official data showed.

According to figures released by the Office of the Commissioner General of Essential Services, passenger train services were operating on 1,098 kilometres of railway lines as of December 22, representing 69 percent of the country’s total rail network. Sri Lanka’s overall railway length stands at 1,593 kilometres.

Several key routes, including major sections of the Northern Line up to Kankesanthurai, the Southern Line from Colombo to Matara and Beliatta, and parts of the Eastern and North Central networks, have resumed passenger services.

However, multiple rail segments remain non-operational due to storm-related damage. These include sections connecting Mannar, Puttalam, Batticaloa, Kandy, and parts of the hill country railway line, where restoration work is still ongoing. (Newswire)
