Sri Lanka’s Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of seven new consultancy committees aimed at strengthening and promoting local production industries, the government said.

The decision expands an existing framework of 20 consultancy boards already operating in the industrial and entrepreneurship development sector. The new committees will focus on indigenous and traditional medicine, confectionery production, traditional handicrafts, poultry-related industries, ornamental fish and seaweed, creative crafts and event management.

Each committee will comprise no more than 25 members, including experts from state institutions, commercial chambers, universities, research bodies and industry specialists. The government said the move is intended to address policy challenges, improve coordination and provide sector-specific guidance to support local industries that have remained underrepresented.

The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Industries and Entrepreneurship Development and received Cabinet approval at its weekly meeting. (Newswire)
