Amsterdam’s historic Vondel Church was largely destroyed by fire shortly after midnight on New Year’s Eve, with its tower and roof collapsing. The 154-year-old former Catholic church, now an event venue, was deemed unsalvageable by emergency officials.

No injuries were reported, but several nearby residences were evacuated. While the cause is unknown, the fire broke out minutes after fireworks were set off, raising suspicions they may be linked.

Vondel Church was designed by Pierre Cuypers, architect of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station.
