Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has warned of enhanced showery conditions across several parts of the island from January 8, due to a low-level atmospheric disturbance located to the southeast of the country.

In its weather forecast issued at 2.00 p.m. on January 5 for January 6, the Department said showers are expected at times in the Eastern, Central, Uva, North-Central and Northern provinces.

Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some places in the Uva Province and in the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several locations in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.

The Meteorology Department further warned that strong winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph could occur at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Eastern provinces. Strong winds are also expected in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala districts.

The public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimise possible damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. (Newswire)
