Sri Lanka on Monday expressed deep concern over recent developments in Venezuela and called for a peaceful resolution in line with international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
In a statement issued on January 5, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said the government is closely monitoring the situation and underscored the importance of respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity and the prohibition of the use of force.
The statement stressed the need for non-intervention and the peaceful settlement of international disputes, urging all parties to prioritise dialogue and de-escalation to ensure the safety and well-being of the Venezuelan people and regional stability.
Sri Lanka also said it was important for the United Nations and its relevant organs, including the UN Security Council, to remain seized of the matter and work towards a peaceful outcome that respects the sovereign rights of Venezuela.
The statement did not name any country or refer to specific military actions. (Newswire)
