US Secretary of State Marco Rubio renewed a warning to Cuba on Sunday, a day after the United States carried out a military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
Speaking to NBC News’ Meet the Press, Rubio said Cuba’s leadership was facing serious consequences, accusing Havana of backing Maduro’s government.
“They’re in a lot of trouble,” Rubio said, without elaborating on what actions Washington might take next.
“I’m not going to talk to you about what our future steps are going to be and our policies are going to be right now in this regard,” he added. “But I don’t think it’s any mystery that we are not big fans of the Cuban regime, who, by the way, are the ones that were propping up Maduro.”
The remarks follow heightened tensions in the region after the US operation in Venezuela, which the Trump administration has described as a decisive move against Maduro’s rule.
US officials have not announced any specific measures targeting Cuba, and the Cuban government has not publicly responded to Rubio’s comments. (Newswire)
