The Department of Meteorology says the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the Bay of Bengal, located to the southeast of Sri Lanka, has intensified into a low-pressure area, due to which the showery conditions over the island, particularly in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces, are expected to increase from January 8.
As such, showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central, Uva, North-Central and Northern provinces today.
Heavy falls of approximately 100 mm are likely in some areas of the Uva province and in the Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, and Ampara districts.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places elsewhere in the Island after 1.00 pm.
Strong winds of about 50 kmph can be expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, the northern, North-central, North-Western, and eastern provinces, as well as in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo, and Monaragala districts. (Newswire)
