Sri Lanka’s largest international gem and jewellery exhibition, Gem Sri Lanka 2026, opened yesterday (January 7) at the Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo, highlighting the country’s global standing in the gem and jewellery industry.
The event was inaugurated under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and marks the third edition of the international exhibition organised by the Ceylon Gem and Jewellery Traders Association.
Gem Sri Lanka 2026 brings together more than 2,000 buyers from over 50 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Italy, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Russia and Germany. The exhibition features 110 stalls and will continue over three days on January 7, 8 and 9.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Amarasuriya emphasised the significant contribution of the gem and jewellery sector to strengthening Sri Lanka’s economy and underscored the importance of safeguarding the country’s global reputation for gems. She also noted that the government would extend full support to elevate the industry through modern entrepreneurial approaches and sustainable practices, while promoting the skills of Sri Lankan artisans and the country’s natural resources to international markets.
The event also saw the official launch of The Sri Lankan Sapphire Legacy magazine, highlighting Sri Lanka’s gem heritage, creativity and international recognition.
The opening ceremony was attended by foreign ambassadors and high commissioners, diplomats, Members of Parliament, senior government officials, industry leaders and international buyers, including CGJTA President Rizwan Nayeem and Vice President Hilmy Cassim. (Newswire)
