According to the notice issued by the Department of Meteorology today at 4:30 p.m., a warning has been issued regarding a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal for the next 24 hours.

The deep depression was located about 150 km east of Batticaloa at 3:30 p.m. on 9 January 2026. The department said it is very likely to move northwestwards and cross the Sri Lanka coast between Trincomalee and Jaffna tomorrow afternoon (10 January 2026).

Director General of the Department of Meteorology, Athula Karunanayake, said that the path of the deep depression has changed and it is now moving in a northwesterly direction.

He added that although it was earlier predicted that the deep depression would make landfall in Sri Lanka today between 5:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., the trajectory and expected time of landfall have changed due to the slow movement of the system, resulting in a delayed landfall. (NewsWire)
