Meta has denied claims of a large-scale Instagram data breach following reports that information linked to as many as 17.5 million users may have been exposed.
In a statement to the Newswire, a Meta spokesperson said the company had addressed a technical issue that allowed an external party to trigger password reset emails for some Instagram users.
“We fixed an issue that allowed an external party to request password reset emails for some Instagram users,” the spokesperson said. “We want to reassure everyone that there was no breach of our systems, and people’s Instagram accounts remain secure. People can disregard these emails, and we apologise for any confusion this may have caused.”
The clarification follows reports from several Instagram users who said they received unexpected password reset emails, sparking concerns online about a possible data breach.
Meta said the incident did not involve unauthorized access to user accounts or the compromise of personal data, and stressed that its systems remain secure.
Meta owns Instagram, one of the world’s largest social media platforms with more than a billion users globally. (Newswire)
