The Colombo District Court has issued an interim injunction preventing the enforcement of a letter issued by the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) that removed Colombo Municipal Councillor Sohara Buhari from party membership.

The SLMC had removed Sohara Buhari from the party on allegations that she voted in favour of the National People’s Power during the Colombo Municipal Council budget vote.

The Colombo District Court issued the interim injunction after considering a petition submitted by the councillor.

The injunction will be effective for 14 days, and the court has also ordered notices to be issued to SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem and General Secretary Nizam Kariapper, named as respondents, to present their positions regarding the petition.

Sohara Buhari stated that during the Colombo Municipal Council budget vote held on December 31, she voted in favour of the National People’s Power.

She further noted that on that day, her party membership was suspended, and she was instructed to submit explanations within seven days through an affidavit.  Sohara Buhari said she received the relevant letter on January 2.

Subsequently, on January 9, when she went to the party headquarters to hand over her objections, they were rejected in a hostile manner, and afterwards, a letter was issued removing her from party membership, she stated in her petition.

The petition argued that the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress’s decision to revoke her party membership without a fair inquiry was unlawful, and therefore requested the court to declare the decision null and void. (Newswire)
