A female computer engineer was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday (13 Jan), accused of releasing nude photographs of her former lover on social media.
According to Aruna newspaper, the Police said the arrested suspect is a 25‑year‑old computer engineer residing in Kandarmadam, Jaffna.
A young man from Jaffna had lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crimes Division of the CID, claiming that his nude photographs were shared through a WhatsApp group by his former girlfriend.
Accordingly, the Northern Province unit of the division launched an investigation, which revealed that the photographs had indeed been released to the WhatsApp group by the complainant’s former girlfriend.
The suspect was taken into custody, and it was uncovered that she had maintained a romantic relationship with the complainant about five years ago.
Following their breakup, she had suffered emotional distress and resentment, and as an act of revenge, she had published the photographs.
After being produced before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court, the suspect was released on bail. (Newswire)
