Bangladesh’s professional cricketers have threatened to boycott all forms of cricket unless Bangladesh Cricket Board director M Nazmul Islam resigns, following remarks players described as insulting and demeaning.
The warning was issued on Wednesday by the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), which represents national and first-class cricketers. The association said Nazmul Islam’s comments crossed an unacceptable line and undermined the dignity of players.
The controversy arose after Nazmul Islam made comments during a media interaction in which he referred to former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal as an “Indian agent” and questioned the loyalty and motives of senior players. He also suggested that players were attempting to pressure authorities over financial and selection-related issues, remarks that were widely criticised within the cricketing fraternity.
CWAB said such statements from a senior board official were disrespectful and damaging, adding that players would not tolerate public attacks on their integrity. The association warned that its members were prepared to withdraw from domestic and international cricket if Nazmul Islam did not step down.
The standoff threatens to disrupt the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, with players indicating they are willing to boycott matches until the matter is resolved.
In response, the Bangladesh Cricket Board issued a statement distancing itself from Nazmul Islam’s remarks, stating that the comments reflected his personal views and not the official position of the board. The BCB said it would review the matter internally.
As of Wednesday, Nazmul Islam had not publicly responded to calls for his resignation. The situation remains unresolved, with further developments expected. (Newswire)
