More cartons than clothes: cigarette smuggling foiled at airport

A suspect has been arrested with a large stock of illegal cigarettes during a raid carried out by the Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau at the Bandaranaike International Airport, police said.

The raid was conducted on the night of January 16 at the airport’s arrival terminal, following information received by officers attached to the Katunayake unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau.

During the operation, officers seized 12,000 foreign-manufactured cigarettes (60 cartons) and 23,800 foreign beedis (119 bundles) that had been illegally brought into the country.

The suspect is a 33-year-old resident of the Matugama area.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Airport Unit of the Police Narcotics Bureau. (Newswire)
