A 35-year-old man has been arrested by the Nawalapitiya Police on suspicion of sexually abusing a seven-year-old schoolgirl, police said yesterday (16).
According to police, both the child and the suspect are residents of an Estate in Nawalapitiya.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect, who was allegedly intoxicated, had taken the child from her home to a location about 500 metres away on the afternoon of the 15th and committed the offence before abandoning her at the scene.
The child was later found around four hours later, lying about 500 metres from her home, following a search conducted by family members after she was reported missing. The child had identified the suspect, after which her relatives lodged a complaint with the Nawalapitiya Police.
The victim was initially admitted to the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital and later transferred to the Peradeniya Children’s Hospital for further treatment. (Newswire)
