
Police have provided an update on the fatal road traffic accident reported around 11.00 p.m. on January 16 near the Ilimba Junction along the Ratnapura–Panadura (A008) main road, in which a 17-year-old youth lost his life.
According to police, another youth aged 22 who was injured in the incident is currently receiving treatment at the Horana Hospital. Investigations revealed that the accident occurred when two motorcyclists, allegedly riding at high speed in a racing manner, collided with a car that was turning towards Ilimba from the opposite direction.
Police said both injured motorcyclists were initially admitted to the Horana Hospital by ambulance. The 17-year-old rider was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the car, a 54-year-old resident of the same area, was produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court and was released on personal bail of Rs. 500,000.
Police further revealed that the deceased motorcyclist did not possess a valid driving licence. Legal action is to be taken against individuals who aided and abetted him in operating the motorcycle.
