Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today accused Speaker of Parliament Jagath Wickramaratne of insulting members of the opposition, after remarks suggesting that five MPs had not passed Grade 5.

Speaking in Parliament today, Premadasa said such comments violated Standing Orders, which prohibit MPs from making derogatory statements about fellow legislators during parliamentary proceedings.

He stressed that the Speaker’s remarks amounted to an insult directed at the opposition, undermining parliamentary decorum.

Premadasa argued that while the government ridiculed opposition MPs over their education, it was simultaneously attempting to introduce obscenity into the Grade 6 curriculum. (Newswire)
