EPF vs pension for private sector: deputy minister clarifies

Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe says the government is paying attention to introducing a pension scheme for employees in the private and semi-government sectors.

He made these remarks while addressing Parliament on Friday (23).

Clarifying his recent statement, the Deputy Minister said that he clarified the distinction between the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and the Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF), and stressed that he never stated the EPF would be converted into a pension scheme.

“My statement was misinterpreted. The EPF exists for social security purposes. What we are focusing on is providing a pension for the private sector and the semi-government sector. I did not say that the EPF fund would be converted into a pension,” he said. (NewsWire)
