The Vesak Festival for 2026 will be held on May 30, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Prof. Chandana Abeyratne has informed the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters.
The minister said the decision was taken based on the recommendations of the Poya Committee, taking into account a request made by the Mahanayake Theras of the three Nikayas.
He noted that the Chief Prelates had informed the President that it would not be appropriate to observe Vesak Poya on May 1, as no auspicious time (nækat) falls on that date.
Accordingly, following the President’s instructions, the Poya Committee convened and agreed to hold the State Vesak Festival on May 30. (Newswire)
