A luxury vehicle that was found locked and abandoned on the Southern Expressway has been taken into police custody for further investigations.

Police said the suspicious vehicle was discovered near the 140 km post between Aparekka and Beliatta on the Southern Expressway, following a tip-off from the Road Development Authority. Officers attached to the Expressway Traffic Police later handed the vehicle over to the Thihagoda Police for further inquiries.

Initial findings revealed that the vehicle had entered the expressway from the Dodangoda interchange and was travelling towards Mattala. Police said investigations based on the vehicle’s registration number showed that another vehicle with the same registration is owned by a person in Ratnapura. However, the engine numbers of the two vehicles are different.

Police also noted that the abandoned vehicle is maroon in colour, while the registered vehicle in Ratnapura is white.

After the vehicle was brought to the Thihagoda Police Station and opened, officers found a diary and a certificate bearing a name from a well-known school in Kurunegala. Further investigations based on an ID copy found in the diary led police to an address in the Pothuhera area. Police said the individual had left his home earlier on January 25. (Newswire)
