
The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha congratulated two young Sri Lankan table tennis players who competed at recent World Table Tennis youth tournaments held in Qatar.
Taavi Samaraweera, 10, of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia, and Muthuli Welathanthrige paid a courtesy call on Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Qatar, Sithara Khan, at the embassy on Jan. 25.
Taavi Samaraweera was recently ranked world No. 1 in the under-11 category and won the under-11 boys’ singles title at the WTT Youth Contender event in Qatar. Muthuli Welathanthrige, the reigning Sri Lanka under-15 champion, also competed in the Doha tournament.
Ambassador Khan welcomed the athletes and praised their commitment and achievements, noting their success at a young age had brought recognition to Sri Lanka on the international stage. She also commended their coach for guiding the players to a competitive global level and wished them continued success in future tournaments.
The athletes were accompanied by their coach, Hasitha Samaraweera, who is also Taavi Samaraweera’s father.
Minister Dharmasiri Wijewardhana and Counsellor Dulanji Herath of the embassy attended the meeting, along with the president and members of the Sri Lanka Coordinating Committee in Qatar.
The embassy extended its best wishes to both athletes and expressed appreciation for their efforts in representing Sri Lanka during their participation in the Qatar tournaments
