China has executed 11 people linked to the powerful Ming family crime syndicate that operated large-scale online scam centres in northern Myanmar, in a major crackdown on transnational cybercrime, state media reported.

The executions were carried out after China’s Supreme People’s Court approved death sentences for crimes including fraud, intentional homicide, unlawful detention and illegal gambling, according to court statements.

The Ming family was one of the so-called “four families” that dominated Myanmar’s Kokang region, long known as a hub for cyber-fraud, human trafficking and drug production. Authorities said the group ran hundreds of scam compounds that targeted victims worldwide and generated billions of dollars in illicit revenue.

China has intensified efforts to dismantle scam networks across Southeast Asia, as cyber-fraud has become a major security and economic concern for the region. (Newswire)
