Mastercard has launched the ‘Tap for Change’ campaign in Sri Lanka, linking everyday contactless card transactions to the construction of the country’s largest community-driven cancer care hospital in Karapitiya.
The initiative, launched today, aims to turn digital payments into contributions for cancer treatment infrastructure, with Mastercard pledging US$750,000 towards the construction of the Trail Cancer Hospital in Karapitiya.
The hospital is planned as a 10-storey, 160-bed facility that will provide advanced cancer care services for both adults and children. It will include modern diagnostic facilities, a bone marrow transplant unit, operating theatres, and a comprehensive continuum of care, expanding access to oncology services across Sri Lanka.
The campaign is being carried out in collaboration with the Colours of Courage Trust, which focuses on supporting cancer patients and improving access to care while promoting social unity and community engagement.
From January 2026, every contactless transaction made using a Mastercard debit or credit card in Sri Lanka will contribute to the hospital project. Cardholders, merchants, and partners will collectively support the construction through everyday digital payments.
Mastercard Country Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives, Sandun Hapugoda, said the company aims to use technology and partnerships to create meaningful social impact, noting that each contactless transaction will contribute towards building the Trail Cancer Hospital and improving access to advanced cancer care.
Former Sri Lanka cricket captain and Colours of Courage Foundation co-founder Mahela Jayawardene said the campaign provides Sri Lankans an opportunity to contribute to a national cause through simple daily actions, with each transaction supporting the creation of a facility expected to benefit thousands of cancer patients and their families.
The Trail Cancer Hospital is expected to improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients, while the initiative aligns with Mastercard’s broader efforts in healthcare access, education, and financial inclusion. (Newswire)
