CID arrests suspect over Rs. 88m gemstone fraud

Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department has arrested a suspect in connection with an alleged financial fraud involving gemstones valued at Rs. 88.05 million, police said.

According to the CID, the suspect is accused of obtaining nine gemstones worth Rs. 88,050,000 and issuing a cheque valued at only Rs. 64.6 million in return, resulting in a significant monetary loss to the complainant.

The arrest was made following a complaint received by the CID. Police said the suspect is a 29-year-old resident of the Kollupitiya area. Further investigations are ongoing.

In a separate case, CID officers have arrested a 45-year-old woman for allegedly aiding and abetting a fraud in which Rs. 10 million was obtained by falsely promising employment opportunities in the United Kingdom.

The suspect was arrested on January 30 in the Wehella area of Dikwella, following investigations based on a complaint received by the CID. Police said further inquiries are continuing into the incident. (Newswire)
