A suspect has been arrested in connection with the criminal intimidation of two lawyers following proceedings at the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court, police said.
According to the Police Media Division, the incident was reported to the Mirihana Police on January 30, after two lawyers appearing in a case before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court were allegedly attacked after concluding court proceedings .
Police said that while the lawyers were leaving the area in their vehicle, a group of individuals blocked the road near the Nugegoda Gamsabha Junction, surrounded the car, issued death threats and damaged the vehicle, amounting to acts of criminal intimidation and mischief.
Following the complaint, three police teams, including officers from the Mirihana Police, were deployed to conduct investigations into the incident .
In the early hours of February 1, a team from the Mirihana Police arrested a suspect in the Kajulandawatte area within the Madampe Police division. The arrest was made on charges including unlawful obstruction, criminal intimidation, mischief and participation in an unlawful assembly .
The suspect is a 43-year-old resident of Kajulandawatte, Madampe, police said.
He is due to be produced before the Nugegoda Magistrate’s Court today for an identification parade. Police said further investigations are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects involved in obstructing the lawful discharge of legal duties and to produce them before court. (Newswire)
