Constitutional Council Resolves Stalemate; Approves New Auditor General

In a decision ending nearly ten months of institutional deadlock, the Constitutional Council (CC) today unanimously approved the appointment of Senior Deputy Auditor General L.S.P. Jayarathna as the new Auditor General of Sri Lanka.

The decision, reached during a session chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, marks the end of a long-standing vacancy that began with the retirement of Chulantha Wickramaratne in April 2025.

The appointment comes after the Constitutional Council had previously rejected four other nominees proposed by the President over the past several months. Those rejections had sparked significant public debate and concerns over the independence of the National Audit Office, particularly following the controversial nomination of a serving military officer for the role in December.

Ms. Jayarathna, a veteran of the National Audit Office, had her name submitted by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. (Newswire)
